San Francisco police made a substantial seizure of illegal fireworks ahead of the Fourth of July celebrations, taking a variety of explosives off the streets that included rockets and "barrel bombs." According to the San Francisco Police Department, the arrest and confiscation occurred yesterday after officers, with the aid of the Real-Time Investigation Center, tailed a stolen U-Haul van through the Bayview District, stopping it and apprehending the driver.
Interim Chief Paul Yep credited this enforcement action with potentially preventing "untold destruction," as confiscated items could have resulted in fires, serious injuries, or worse. "Every year, fireworks lead to serious injuries, fires, and other critical incidents that our officers routinely respond to," Yep explained, underscoring the danger posed by such explosives. SF police have ramped up efforts to curb illegal fireworks, deploying additional resources in anticipation of the holiday when incidents involving fireworks typically surge. The driver of the van, 38-year-old Joe Jenkins, faces multiple charges, including possession of illegal fireworks and explosives, per the San Francisco Police Department.
The SFPD emphasized the risks associated with fireworks, especially the "ground to sky" types and barrel bombs, which were among the items seized. These are known for their potential to cause significant harm to the public. The city maintains a strict stance against fireworks, underlining that all types are illegal within San Francisco.
