On Wednesday, police executed a search warrant related to sex crimes in the 5200 block of Evanbrook Terrace when Jose Martinez fled the scene. According to the City of Oklahoma City, Martinez allegedly armed himself with a gun and ran into a wooded area.
Sgt. Justin Kuehn, a seven-year veteran, found Martinez trying to retrieve a firearm he had thrown over a fence. Martinez was wanted for over a week on warrants including three counts of first-degree rape and one count of forcible oral sodomy. A City of Oklahoma City bulletin stated, "Sgt. Kuehn ordered Martinez to stop. Martinez ignored Sgt. Kuehn’s commands, reached down and picked up the firearm, and was subsequently shot by Sgt. Kuehn." Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene, and no other injuries occurred.
Sgt. Kuehn has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the officer-involved shooting, as reported by the City of Oklahoma City. The investigation will review the circumstances surrounding the use of lethal force. Officials are gathering evidence, and further updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
