The award celebrates the city's CleanPowerSF program, which has been pivotal in slashing emissions by 98% in the electricity sector and achieving 100% renewable energy ahead of its scheduled target. "Our CleanPowerSF program helps hundreds of thousands of households and businesses access clean, reliable electricity while reducing our city's emissions and building a more sustainable future," Mayor Lurie proudly stated, as per the City and County of San Francisco. The program, serving over 380,000 accounts, has boasted a savings of about $50 million annually for its customers compared to traditional utilities.
This recognition underscores a saga of environmental leadership for the city, tracing back to adopting its Climate Action Plan nearly three decades ago. The Plan has heralded significant innovations, such as the standard-setting three-bin waste system and the much-lauded CleanPowerSF initiative. As part of its commitment to climate goals, San Francisco will now direct a $25,000 grant from the award to a local nonprofit.
Amongst the city's sustainable developments are long-term contracts to procure clean energy, contributing to an expansive portfolio that includes over 600 megawatts from solar, wind, and geothermal sources, as well as significant battery storage capacity. The city's CleanPowerSF has notably finalized the city's largest wind energy agreement to add substantially to this clean energy mix. "Local solutions are a path to addressing the climate crisis, and I’m proud that CleanPowerSF is being recognized for the role it plays in San Francisco’s climate leadership," Dennis Herrera, SFPUC General Manager, told the City and County of San Francisco.
