The San José Police Department has arrested a couple, Ellen and Mark Mangundayao, on charges of embezzlement and conspiracy following a report of missing funds at a local casino. The operation spanned May 1 to May 22, with Ellen allegedly pilfering gaming chips and Mark cashing them out. Officials estimate the theft to span several years, amassing hundreds of thousands of dollars.

During the investigation, spearheaded by the SJPD Financial Crimes Unit with support from the Division of Gaming Control, detectives identified the two San José residents as prime suspects. Search and arrest warrants led authorities to the culprits and their associated properties, according to the San José Police Department. The arrest of Ellen Mangundayao yielded $4,750 in casino chips found on her person.

Further searches revealed an additional $75,000 in cash and about $10,000 in casino chips, evidence that underscored the scale of the embezzlement scheme. The Mangundayaos were subsequently booked at the Santa Clara County Main Jail, awaiting processing on what could result in considerable jail time upon conviction.

The SJPD urges anyone with information to contact Detective Corini via email at [email protected] or by phone at 408-277-4654.
