The court date is set for Santoria McLean, the 31-year-old woman facing multiple charges in connection with a fatal accident that took the life of South Fulton Police Captain Helio Anthony Garcia. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, McLean is charged with reckless driving, speeding, improper lane change, and first-degree vehicular homicide for the April collision on the intersection of Flat Shoals Road and Connell Road. Investigators reported that McLean crossed the center line, which resulted in a head-on crash with Garcia's patrol vehicle.
Garcia, who was 47 and on duty at the time of the crash was a dedicated public servant and a family man with three children. After the crash, both McLean, and Garcia were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital. While McLean recovered after spending roughly a month in care, Garcia succumbed to his injuries. Since being denied bond in May, McLean has been held at the Fulton County Jail, Atlanta News First reports.
Reflecting on the aftermath of the tragedy, Atlanta News First captured the heartfelt words of Garcia's wife, Eliana, "A man that would be next to you through the good and the bad, a man that would always come home, a man that was always there for his children." The loss resonated throughout the South Fulton Police Department, with Chief Keith Meadows honoring Garcia's legacy at a memorial, stating the captain knew "Police officers police differently when we have relationships in the community and Helio knew that.” As the legal proceedings unfold, the specifics of what will transpire in court today remain uncertain. The scheduled court appearance is slated for 9 a.m.
