Recruit Class 86 is deep into a series of drills, sharpening their life-saving skills, according to the Shelby County Fire Department's official Facebook page.
The post showcases various aspects of their training regime, starting with a blind drill, where one recruit notably forgot his glove, which is a stark reminder of the importance of gear in protecting these individuals who are putting themselves on the line for community safety. The rigorous program also involved search and rescue exercises, where recruits practiced navigating through unknown conditions to locate and rescue "downed mates" in full gear. In firefighting, these simulations reflect hard, often grim realities that await these trainees.
Physical fitness is another pillar of their training, with the recruits dedicating time to group workouts designed to build the necessary strength and conditioning required for the job. Hose roll drills require recruits to be precise and quick, with foundational skills for being out on the fireground—every second counts to the difference between loss and salvage, despair and hope.
Another critical skill honed during the week was forcible entry—a technique potentially meaning the difference between life and death. "Forcible Entry – second counts, recruits learn how to gain access quickly and safely, saving lives," the Shelby County Fire Department detailed. This part of the training was facilitated with the help of the Germantown Fire Department, highlighting a collaborative effort between fire services.
