Violence disrupted festivities in St. Louis' The Grove district during what should have been a celebratory PrideFest weekend. According to KSDK, early yesterday morning around 1:30 a.m., police patrolling near Manchester Avenue and South Sarah Street observed a fight that culminated in a 34-year-old woman shooting another woman in the leg. A 22-year-old woman, thinking her friend had been hit, fired back, hitting the 34-year-old in the back.

Both women were taken into custody and transported to area hospitals with their injuries. As the department had limited ability due to the event's lack of a permit and security to manage the crowd, Mitch McCoy, a spokesperson for St. Louis police, underscored the challenges faced in trying to ensure public safety. With the event drawing unexpectedly large crowds, tensions seemed to rise and spill over into nearby areas, he told FOX 2 Now.

Another wave of disruption followed last night when officers intervened in a fight near Manchester and Boyle, resulting in multiple other brawls breaking out, recounted McCoy. This led to an officer being hospitalized after a fall. Following this series of altercations, arrests were made including a minor, and a rifle which was recovered at the scene. McCoy expressed heartbreak over the incidents, emphasizing that celebrations of identity were co-opted by individuals with "very bad intents."

Meanwhile, local businesses like Rehab Saint Louis expressed frustration at the broad painting of the events. In a statement provided to First Alert 4, Rehab described an "environment we built for queer people and allies to just be" which was filled with positivity and safety measures. They lamented that their efforts and the broader narrative of joy would likely be overshadowed by the violence outside. "No one will talk about that," the bar's statement read.

With the atmosphere in the district taking a turn, St. Louis Mayor Cara Spencer declared a curfew for local bars and nightclubs, stating bluntly for celebrants to "leave your guns at home," as reported by First Alert 4. The focus of the community and law enforcement now remains on reconceptualizing the coordination of large gatherings to prevent such tragedies from marring future celebrations of Pride.
