A 6-year-old boy is recovering in the hospital after being shot during a Father's Day shooting in Smyrna. According to WALB, the incident occurred around 4 p.m. near the intersection of Spring Road and Campbell Road, involving gunfire exchanged between two vehicles. The child, identified only as Asher, was shot in the stomach and taken to Wellstar Cobb Medical Center by one of the vehicles involved, which then left the scene.

Smyrna police have charged two men, Craig Calhoun and Eric Rushi, with multiple offenses including aggravated assault with a firearm from a vehicle and cruelty to children. Police stated one of the vehicles involved remained at the scene while the investigation continues.

FOX 5 Atlanta reported that Asher’s mother, Teria McCrary, said she was driving with her family when Calhoun allegedly fired at their vehicle. McCrary stated that her fiancée, Rushi, returned fire in response. She said there was no prior conflict with Calhoun.

Asher has undergone three surgeries to treat injuries to his liver and gallbladder and is expected to face a fourth procedure, according to FOX 5 Atlanta. The investigation remains active as police work to determine the full circumstances of the shooting.
