After more than 20 years, a man has been arrested in connection with the 2003 death of Paul Herlihy in Milford, New Hampshire. Douglas Herlihy, 39, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of his father. He was arrested yesterday in Saugus, Massachusetts, and is being held without bail, according to the office of New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella, as reported by Boston.com.
At the time of his father's death, Douglas was 17 and was detained but not named a suspect. He faced charges of theft and motor vehicle violations. His arrest follows a recent breakthrough in the case, made possible by cooperation between New Hampshire and Massachusetts authorities.
According to Boston25News, Paul Herlihy's body was found during a welfare check in August 2003, and an autopsy confirmed the cause of death as blunt force trauma. Douglas was briefly considered a suspect after his father's death, leading to a manhunt. His arraignment is expected in Essex County Superior Court, followed by possible extradition to New Hampshire.
The cold case unit’s work, along with state police efforts, has reopened the case after 22 years, bringing new developments.
