A St. Louis man has been handed a severe sentence for a 2023 drive-by shooting that resulted in the death of a neighbor and placed another individual in peril. The Circuit Attorney's Office reports that 36-year-old Arthur Richardson received three consecutive life sentences plus an additional 35 years yesterday. A jury had previously found him guilty of multiple offenses, including first-degree murder and first-degree assault, on April 30, 2025.
The homicide, which shook the Gravois Park neighborhood, involved Richardson discharging several rounds from the street and fatally shooting 23-year-old Anthony Kent in the head as he stood on his porch. The shooting, that transpired on August 26, 2023, also endangered Nabiel Kassis, who narrowly avoided injury. According to evidence brought forward during the trial, all bullets were confirmed to have been fired from Richardson's position in the street, with no evidence of return fire. The aforementioned sentencing follows the conviction, with the specific breakdown including life without parole for the murder charge, life for assault, and another life sentence for the unlawful use of a weapon, due to firing from a vehicle at a person.
The court's decision also imposed additional consecutive years for Richardson's actions: 15 for armed criminal action related to the murder, 10 for the assault charge, and a further 10 years for armed criminal action associated with the unlawful use of a weapon. "This was a targeted act of violence that cost a young man his life and put others at risk," said Circuit Attorney Gabe Gore in a statement obtained by the Circuit Attorney's Office. The prosecution, handled by Assistant Circuit Attorneys Chris Faerber and Ryan Dowd, led to Thursday's heavy sentencing with an aim to ensure Richardson would not pose a threat to any community again.
The Gravois Park neighborhood has, with Richardson's conviction and sentencing, seen the resolution of one of its more disturbing criminal cases in recent years. "Today's sentence ensures the defendant will never again threaten our neighborhoods," Gore elaborated, his office having managed to secure a conviction that not only punishes but seeks to deter similar acts of violence in the future. While the legal proceedings have drawn to a close, the ramifications of such senseless violence, continue to ripple through the community and all who knew Anthony Kent.
