
Stephanie Thompson has been appointed as the new Municipal Court Judge and Administrative Hearing Officer for Athens-Clarke County, starting July 1. The decision was made by the Mayor and Commission during a Special Called Session, according to an Athens-Clarke County announcement.
Thompson has worked in the Hall County Solicitor General’s Office since 2015, serving as Assistant Solicitor General, Chief, and most recently, Interim Solicitor General since August 2024. She has prosecuted misdemeanor cases including DUI and drug possession.
She has also served as a State Court Prosecutor for mental health and family treatment courts and was named Hall County Employee of the Year in 2021. Her community involvement includes roles with the Hall County Domestic Violence Task Force and the Board of Directors for the Children’s Center for Hope and Healing. Thompson holds a Juris Doctor from John Marshall Law School and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Georgia State University.
She will replace Interim Municipal Court Judge Jim Davis. In 2024, the Municipal Court handled over 72,000 cases, including local ordinance violations, misdemeanor traffic offenses, and other misdemeanors such as shoplifting and underage alcohol possession. As Administrative Hearing Officer, Thompson will also oversee matters related to licensing and permitting under local ordinances.
