Two individuals have been apprehended by Gwinnett County Police in connection with a string of armed robberies occurring across metro Atlanta. The arrests happened following incidents that included a robbery where a clerk had a baby in a stroller, a detail that has heightened concern in the local community, as FOX 5 Atlanta reports.
Jairo Martinez-Villafranca, 37, and Belki Reyes-Cordova, 28, are facing multiple charges including armed robbery, aggravated assault, and child cruelty. According to authorities, on May 13, the suspects hit two grocery stores within one day, at one point confronting a store clerk and demanding cash as, a baby lay nearby. The use of FLOCK surveillance technology allowed police to identify and track the vehicle believed to be used in the crimes, leading to the apprehension of the suspects.
A subsequent search warrant executed at an address connected to Martinez-Villafranca helped law enforcement officials identify Reyes-Cordova as the second suspect. "Using the county's FLOCK cameras, investigators were able to track and stop a vehicle believed to be connected with the robberies," Gwinnett County Police detailed, according to FOX 5 Atlanta.
The chain of events came to a head when the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Task Force arrested Reyes-Cordova last Thursday, as further detailed in a report by The Georgia Sun. Both individuals are reportedly being held without bond in the Gwinnett County Jail, and authorities highlight that the alleged crime spree extended to another robbery in DeKalb County, signaling a pattern of escalating crimes across the region.
As is standard in crime reporting, the suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty, however, the charges laid out paint a grim picture of the alleged actions that took place. They are currently awaiting further legal proceedings, with their charges including two counts of armed robbery, two counts of aggravated assault, a possession of a firearm during the commission of certain crimes, and third-degree child cruelty.
