Drivers in Memphis should brace for some disruptions as the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) kicks off a hefty resurfacing and bridge repair effort on Interstate 240. The work spans from near Poplar Avenue (Exit 15) to Summer Avenue (Exit 12), targeting an area that sees around 176,000 vehicles every day, according to TDOT.

APAC-Tennessee Inc., who won the contract for the $8 million project, will start laying down fresh asphalt starting tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. Working overnight from Sunday to Thursday, they will keep one lane open to ensure that at least a trickle of the usual traffic can maintain their nightly march.

However, while resurfacing seems a nightly affair, completing the bridge work comes with a heftier price – two full weekend closures of I-240 East over the Greenway are necessary. TDOT has not specified dates, but has committed to giving notice well in advance. TDOT's commitment to keeping the public informed continues with options to check current conditions via the TN SmartWay Traffic website, or by tuning into 511, according to the same announcement.

While construction updates are easy to find on platforms like X—through @myTDOT for statewide travel and @NicLawrenceTDOT for West Tennessee—drivers are reminded not to check their devices while driving. The project is expected to be completed by November 30.
