Violence has once again marred the community in Chicago's West Town and Humboldt Park neighborhoods, with two separate shooting incidents happening just blocks apart this past Sunday. As reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, a 15-year-old boy was shot in an alley on the 2600 block of West Evergreen Avenue at approximately 3:30 p.m. The victim was struck in the right leg and is currently in critical condition at Stroger Hospital. As of the latest update, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
Meanwhile, not too far away, another 15-year-old boy was seriously wounded under still uncertain circumstances. Initially thought to have been a victim of a shooting, further claims suggest the teen might have accidentally shot himself. According to a CBS News Chicago interview, Felicia Wings, a neighbor and ten-year resident, recounted how the teen seemed to be hurt with his gun: "A young boy was running and jumping up the gates, and I guess he maybe ended up shooting himself in the leg while he came over the last gate."
This series of events comes on the heels of another violent episode in Humboldt Park the previous evening. At 10 p.m. Saturday, a drive-by shooting near California Avenue and Thomas Street resulted in injuries to three men, with victims aged 27, 42, and 45, as per CBS News Chicago. They were shot in the legs and are all expected to survive after being treated at local hospitals. Both shootings are still under investigation, with detectives actively seeking leads in these cases.
