Three individuals sustained injuries in a shooting incident near Indianapolis' revered Monument Circle. As reported by FOX59, the incident took place in this morning, with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) responding to an alert at the intersection of South Meridian and West Washington Street, just shy of 2 a.m. Upon arrival, officers found two men and one woman with gunshot wounds, all of whom were later hospitalized and reported to be in stable condition.
Aspiring to convey the gravity of violence marring a landmark as historic as Monument Circle, IMPD Public Information Officer Drew Brown in a statement obtained by WTHR communicated, "It's a sacred place in our state. To see violence unfold here on the steps is unsettling." The Circle, dubbed as the "gem of our city," had suddenly and disturbingly turned into a crime scene.
Multiple individuals have been detained in relation to the shooting, detailed by IMPD, and authorities have managed to recover a firearm alongside multiple shell casings from the site. Investigators are still piecing together the complexities of this violent tapestry, with streets surrounding the Monument Circle expected to remain closed for several hours to aid the investigation process. IMPD has actively solicited assistance from the public, urging those with pertinent information to contact IMPD or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana.
According to WISH-TV, the police were close by, working crowd control for an event at Gainbridge Fieldhouse when they heard the gunshots around 1:45 a.m. The involvement of the detained suspects in this tragic event at the monumental heart of Indianapolis is still under investigation, as no arrests have been announced. Officer Brown highlighted, after the cleanup and investigation, Monument Circle remains closed.
