
The Chicago Police Department has announced a series of arrests in connection with a spree of violent crimes that occurred early in the morning on Thursday. Three male juveniles, ages 13, 16, and 17, have been charged with multiple felonies, including aggravated vehicular hijacking and armed robbery, after a sequence of robberies targeting several victims across different locations in the city's 2nd District. According to the Chicago Police Department's official news release, the crimes began at about 6:30 a.m. at the 3800 block of S. Ellis Ave., continuing at a rapid pace until the last reported incident at 7:10 a.m. at the 6800 block of S. Paxton Ave.
Detailed in the police statement, the first offender, a 13-year-old male juvenile, faces one felony count for aggravated vehicular hijacking with a weapon, alongside a slew of armed robbery charges, three with a firearm and four with another dangerous weapon—and an additional felony count for an attempted armed robbery, also with another dangerous weapon, the charges don't stop there as the apprehended youth also stands accused of aggravated battery in a public place. The second suspect, 16, and the third, 17, are facing equal charges under the law, each mirroring the counts applied to the first offender's list, reflecting the severity and group nature of their alleged criminal conduct.
The juveniles were apprehended by authorities at the 13000 block of S. Ellis Ave. and were swiftly placed in custody. Their identification as the culprits came after a series of incidents victimizing individuals of varying ages, with the victims spanning from a 29-year-old female to a 66-year-old, as the police report highlighted escalating violence that transpired in less than an hour, the suspects moved from one victim to the next, initiating a palpable climate of fear amongst residents of the South Side.
