Early this morning, a crash on Interstate 95 North in Burlington caused major traffic delays and left one person seriously injured. The collision, involving a tractor-trailer and a passenger car, happened around 6:30 a.m. near the intersection of Route 3 and I-95, according to Massachusetts State Police.

As WHDH reported, several large metal plates dislodged from the truck during the crash and scattered across the highway, leading to temporary lane closures. Cleanup of the metal debris was completed by 7:40 a.m. A diesel spill of approximately 28 gallons was also contained by 9:15 a.m., with fire crews working to stop the leak from the tractor-trailer.

The driver of the passenger car was seriously injured and taken to Lahey Hospital, state police confirmed.

George Goffredo, the driver of the tractor-trailer, described the crash to NBC10 Boston, saying, “Next thing you know, I heard a big bang. He was underneath me at an angle. He picked up my truck and he literally tossed it in such a way where all the momentum of the truck rocked, and that's why I think the steel plates broke loose. I had them chained down with four chains, all within spec.”

The crash affected both northbound and southbound lanes. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation stated that temporary lane closures at Exit 50 lasted through the morning commute, with all lanes reopening around 9 a.m. Photos from the scene showed heavy damage to a flatbed truck and an SUV with a smashed windshield.

State police are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.
