In a troubling incident in Woburn, Massachusetts, two children were hospitalized after an SUV struck them while they were biking, according to local authorities. The accident took place yesterday at the intersection of Cambridge Road and Sylvanus Wood Lane. Footage from the scene showed a stationary gray SUV surrounded by a small crowd of onlookers.
As reported by WCVB, the children, between 10 and 12 years old, made a wide, left turn into traffic and collided with the oncoming vehicle. One youth was actively pedaling, the other took perch on pegs behind them. The driver of the SUV remained at the scene and was not charged or cited in relation to the incident, police said. Despite the alarming nature of the event, authorities described their injuries as minor, with one child possibly suffering a broken or fractured wrist and another sustaining a leg injury.
Both children were promptly transported to local hospitals following the accident. One was taken to Boston Children's Hospital and the other to Massachusetts General Hospital. Police suggested the hospitalizations were largely precautionary, indicating that fortunately, no significant injuries were reported. However, the potential for such accidents to end in a far more serious outcome underscores a persistent need for vigilance on our roads.
Additional confirmation from Boston 25 News indicates that witnesses saw the children make the turn at approximately 5:15 p.m. yesterday evening. The Woburn Police are continuing their investigation into the collision. The incident has drawn attention to the interactions between vehicles and pedestrians or cyclists in suburban areas.
