
Two individuals were injured in an accidental shooting at a Big Lots store in Covington yesterday around 1:30 p.m. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, the incident occurred when a firearm discharged from inside a woman’s purse while she was at the checkout counter at the store located on the 3100 block of Highway 278.
Covington Police reported that the woman dropped her purse and picked it up, then placed it on the counter. The firearm inside fell out and discharged upon hitting the ground. The bullet struck the woman in the ankle and then ricocheted, injuring a relative nearby.
Both individuals were treated for non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to recover.
Images from the scene showed police and emergency vehicles outside the store. No other injuries were reported. In a statement to 11Alive, Covington Police said, “Following a review of the incident, and after consultation with the Newton County District Attorney's Office, it has been determined that no criminal charges are warranted based on the facts and circumstances.”
Authorities reminded the public about the importance of safe firearm handling and storage, especially in public settings.
