On May 23, 2024, a fatal hit-and-run incident occurred on Interstate 95 in Fort Lauderdale, claiming the life of a 36-year-old motorcyclist from Tamarac. Over a year following the tragic event, authorities have apprehended Matthew James Golfin, aged 40, and Jeffrey Scott Adler, aged 60, as the suspects responsible for the crime.
According to NBC Miami, Golfin was behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Suburban when he rear-ended the motorcyclist, causing him to be ejected from his BMW bike. Adler, who was driving a Porsche Boxster, subsequently ran over the victim and failed to render aid, fleeing the scene instead. This series of events led to another motorcyclist, a 43-year-old woman from Pompano Beach, crashing and suffering severe leg injuries as she attempted to avoid the initial wreckage.
The investigation incorporated evidence from the crash site, including vehicle parts, and leveraged license plate reader data to link the specific vehicles to the suspects. Further details from the case revealed that Golfin had texted the owner of the Suburban claiming that the vehicle had been stolen, only to later confess to hitting something and needing repairs. A witness reported to the authorities that Golfin was heavily intoxicated and described him as "very aggressive and scary" as he drove, according to Local 10.
In a recent court appearance, the anguish of the victim's loved ones was palpable. "They took my boyfriend, they took a father, they took a brother, they took a son. This man was everything, he was my life and they broke my heart," the victim's girlfriend expressed, as reported by Local 10. Adler and Golfin are both facing charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving death and tampering with evidence. They were ordered held on $65,000 and $100,000 bonds respectively and, if released, will have to submit to electronic monitoring.
