In an update that streamlines processes for travelers and other stakeholders, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has launched a new mobile application called CBP Link. This app promises to consolidate a host of functionalities, reshaping how individuals and businesses interact with border services. Specifically, CBP Link is designed to diminish data requirements for users, enhancing the efficiency and convenience of their interaction with CBP services. The announcement was made official through a national media release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
CBP Link emerges as a digital solution for a variety of needs, such as enabling Visa Waiver Program travelers to apply for and pay for an I-94 form up to seven days before entering the United States. Moreover, it offers an inspection request platform for perishable cargo and a feature to check border wait times. Significantly, bus operators can now submit a manifest directly through the app, simplifying what was once an onerous process. Compatibility with previous user data means that no new steps are necessary for those who have transitioned from the former CBP Home app—they can continue as usual with the new platform.
It's important to distinguish CBP Link from its predecessor, the CBP Home mobile application. While CBP Home previously housed multiple functions, it will now focus solely on facilitating self-deportation for unlawfully present aliens. These individuals will have access to resources, including cost-free travel and a $1,000 exit bonus, contingent upon the confirmation of their return through the app. This tailored approach by CBP aims to incentivize voluntary compliance and expedite the process for those seeking to self-deport. Should unreported individuals decide to leave the U.S., CBP Home will offer forgiveness for civil fines and any penalties that could be incurred for failing to depart on time, according to the same press release.
Both applications, CBP Home and CBP Link, are readily available at no charge on popular platforms such as Google Play and Apple’s App Store, in addition to being accessible through the CBP website.
