Medical students from the University of Cincinnati are stepping up, providing much-needed health care services while concurrently sharpening their clinical skills. This clinic, operational throughout the year, mimics an urgent care facility, offering an assortment of services from lab tests to over-the-counter medications and vital health screenings, as reported by a recent article from the University of Cincinnati.
Since its conception in 2019, the clinic has not only served the community but also carved a path for future physicians to understand the gritty realities of health disparities. Focusing on the uninsured adults, the clinic delivers care that ranges from blood pressure and blood glucose testing to pregnancy assessments. With each step they take, the students of UC are expanding their knowledge base, walking hand in hand with those often omitted from the narrative of healthcare. Emma Schaefer, a third-year medical student and co-chair of the clinic, stated through UC News, "We learn about the social determinants of health in the classroom and then see them play out in real life. We see socially and financially complex patient cases."
The aspirations of the clinic do not halt at urgent care services.
