The ancient streets of Pompeii continue to hold tales untold, even two millennia after their peak, as the University of Cincinnati's latest excavation sheds light on a rather unexpected facet of Roman life—the trade in exotic animals. Guided by UC Classics Professor Steven Ellis, the Pompeii excavation delved into the Porta Stabia neighborhood, revealing a once-bustling retail district entangled in layers of volcanic ash bestowed by Mount Vesuvius.
Within the unearthed retail utopia, archaeologists stumbled upon a variety of establishments, from shops to entertainment locales, where Ellis and his team, meticulously sifting through the remains, have disclosed details on the ancient Romans' diet. According to a news release from the University of Cincinnati, the discovery encompasses a diverse range of offerings, including grains and local produce, as well as items sourced from distant shores, such as shellfish and spices like sesame seeds and peppercorns. Traversing the drains of what were once kitchens and eateries, the team was pointed to the Romans' taste for far-flung flavors.
However, amidst the assortment of culinary remains, one finds a peculiar figure—a butchered giraffe leg. The origins of this piece, noble in its rarity, have sparked conversation and curiosity among scholars, offering a glimpse into the complex network of trade that the Romans had established, spanning across their vast empire. The giraffe remnant suggests that not only common sustenance but also the exotic and unusual graced the tables of this historic city.
In what could be seen as a grand bazaar of the ancient world, Pompeii's retail district, uncovered by Ellis and his team, pointed to the existence of a broad spectrum of commerce embedded within the city walls. Their work, toiling among the ruins, has unearthed more than just artifacts—it has reshaped our understanding of Roman life, cuisine, and the trade practices that underpinned an empire. Professor Ellis's investigation into Pompeii's culinary past continues to serve up fresh insights into a civilization intent on satisfying its appetite for the extraordinary.
