Springfield drivers, mark your calendars for some upcoming detours. Starting on June 16, Burton Avenue will be shut down just south of the Chestnut Expressway. This closure is a part of a larger safety and operational project that aims to enhance this section of Greene's road network. The construction activities, set to run through June 23, will involve the meticulous reconstruction and paving of approaches to Chestnut Expressway (Business 65).
The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has announced the details of this traffic alert, which points to Blevins Asphalt Construction Co., Inc. of Mt. Vernon as the contractor in charge of executing the work for a low bid amount of $9.4 million. Drivers should anticipate Burton Avenue completely closed in the affected segment, while the Chestnut Expressway will remain open to facilitate the flow of traffic. Yet, with crews and heavy machinery in close proximity to live lanes, there's an advisory for heightened caution in the zone.
Electronic signage around the construction site will keep commuters informed about current conditions and any deviations from the planned schedule. To avoid any inconvenience, motorists are encouraged to consult MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map for updates on road closures and traffic disruptions. It's worth noting, however, that unexpected shifts in weather or unforeseen construction hurdles have the potential to push the timeline out of alignment.
According to the project's website, the overarching goal is to complete the entirety of the Chestnut Expressway Safety and Operational Improvements by June 30, 2026. This ambitious timeframe underscores a significant upgrade to the infrastructure intended to bolster both safety and efficiency for Springfield's motorists. For now, commuters will need to plan ahead and exercise patience as this necessary closure unfolds, inching us closer to smoother and safer travels on these city thoroughfares.
