In an announcement that serves as both a testament to dedication and a nod to international flair, Utah volleyball's own Neea-Maria Joki has been chosen to join the Finland Senior National Women's Volleyball Team, readying to spike and serve at the European Championship later this year. University of Utah Athletics broke the news, spotlighting Joki's ascent to an elite squad that only boasts the best 15 athletes Finland has to offer.
With a roster currently exceeding the limit by one, the team will have to finely whittle down to 14 players before their European Championship qualifying games in August. Preparing to fiercely compete on an international stage, the addition of Joki aims to infuse the already potent Finland team with her proven prowess on court. Utah Volleyball head coach Beth Launiere has been quick to celebrate Joki's talent, stating, "This is a big step for Neea, and is representative of the type of player she is and the direction she is headed in her volleyball career," as per Utah Utes News.
Before her move to Utah, Joki played a significant season with Clemson Volleyball, where she was quickly established as a key player. Not only did she lead the team in aces, but she also clinched third place for overall team scoring. A versatile pin attacker, her journey through the ranks of the Finnish Volleyball Junior National Teams has not only earned her numerous North European Championship titles but also individual accolades such as the 2021 Finnish Volleyball Female Junior of the Year.
But Joki isn't the only Ute showcasing her talents on a global scale. Her fellow teammates and coaching staff are set to spread out to different national teams, implicitly promising to bring a worldly perspective back to the Utah Volleyball program following their summer endeavors. According to Utah Utes News, "Utes fans are going to love watching her play this fall," encapsulating the excitement about Joki and others' international undertakings.
