Phoenix drivers are advised to prepare for significant road closures and detours this weekend as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) continues its ongoing freeway improvement projects. From Friday through Monday, key ramps and lanes will be closed to facilitate bridge work and other construction efforts tied to the Loop 101 widening project.
The most notable closure involves both the northbound and southbound Interstate 17 ramps to westbound Loop 101, which will be shut down from 10:00 p.m. on Friday until 5:00 a.m. on Monday. Motorists traveling north on I-17 are encouraged to exit at Rose Garden Lane, while those heading south should detour at Deer Valley Road. From those points, drivers can use 27th Avenue to access westbound Loop 101. In addition to the ramp closures, the right lane of westbound Loop 101 near 31st Avenue will also be closed, likely causing delays and congestion. These disruptions are part of a broader effort to enhance infrastructure and traffic flow throughout the Phoenix metropolitan area.
The freeway upgrades are funded by Proposition 400, a sales tax initiative passed by Maricopa County voters in 2004. More recently, voters approved Proposition 479 in November, which extends the half-cent sales tax to support future transportation developments across the region.
Drivers are urged to consult real-time traffic updates before heading out. Current highway conditions can be accessed through the AZ511.gov website, the az511 mobile app, or by dialing 511. ADOT also reminds motorists that weather and other unforeseen circumstances could alter the planned construction schedule.
Additional closures remain in effect, including the westbound Loop 101 on-ramp at 35th Avenue and the off-ramp at 51st Avenue, both of which will stay closed for several weeks due to ongoing reconstruction work. These projects aim to improve safety and reduce congestion on Phoenix’s increasingly busy freeway corridors.
