A mother was arrested in West Palm Beach after her 4-year-old child was found nearly drowned in a pool. According to the West Palm Beach Police Department, the incident happened last Friday near 4100 North Haverhill Drive, where first responders had to employ life-saving measures on the child before rushing to the hospital, as reported by CBS12.
Nytearia Thomas, the 27-year-old mother, is now facing child neglect allegations after an investigation suggested that she was not providing the necessary supervision for her child at the time of the near-drowning, witnesses at the scene attested that Thomas was not paying close attention and the subsequent police inquiry corroborated these claims, which led to her arrest.
WPBF further delves into the case, highlighting that the police were able to swiftly determine that Thomas was not actively supervising her child, leading to the charges against her. Fortunately, the child survived the ordeal and is currently recovering in the hospital, however, the incident has propelled the West Palm Beach Police to issue a series of recommendations, they are that parents and caregivers need to always supervise children in or near water without distractions, including avoiding the use of phones, and they recommend staying within arm’s reach of young children at all times, and they stress the importance of installing appropriate barriers around pools.
The Police Department is urging parents to learn CPR and always keep a close eye on their children around water. They stress that drowning can happen quickly and silently, and it's dangerous to assume someone else is responsible for watching the child.
