Biking and walking across town just got a whole lot easier in West Sacramento as the Sycamore Trail Overpass officially opened last Thursday. The overpass, specifically designed for pedestrians and cyclists, marks a pivotal change in how locals can traverse the divide that Highway 50 once presented. According to a statement obtained by the City of West Sacramento, this is the first bridge in the city that caters exclusively to those not in motor vehicles.
Amidst the fanfare of the opening, Mayor Martha Guerrero highlighted the bridge's significance. "This bridge does something truly transformative,” she commented, referencing the previous barriers that pushed residents to opt for cars over more sustainable transit options. The inaugural festivities weren't just a sedate affair - they included a community bike ride starting from City Hall to Joey Lopes Park, and ended with an energized crossing of the new overpass, signaling an era of improved connectivity, as stated by the City of West Sacramento.
This isn't just a one-off project; it's part of a bigger picture for the city's infrastructure. The Sycamore Trail Overpass is a key piece of Phase II in the Sycamore Trail Extension Project. Once all five phases are complete, the plan will form a continuous path connecting several key points in the city, from Sacramento Avenue near Yolo Street to Lake Washington and Jefferson Boulevards, as per the City of West Sacramento announcement.
