A tragic incident occurred in Coronado yesterday when a woman died after her vehicle crashed into the San Diego Bay. The accident happened near the Loews Coronado Bay Resort on Coronado Bay Road, as reported by the City of Coronado Police Department and covered in a follow-up by CBS 8.
The emergency call was received at approximately 4:15 PM, leading to a swift response from local fire departments, lifeguards, the U.S. Coast Guard, Harbor Police, and California State Parks personnel who worked collectively to access the submerged two-door vehicle, a Ford Mustang; however, despite their efforts, the lone adult female occupant in the vehicle was pronounced deceased at the scene. Coronado Police Lieutenant Anthony Flores said the car went into the water and was fully submerged by the time officers arrived on the scene, with the woman underwater for an estimated 30 to 40 minutes, according to police.
Witness Mike Koester offered his perspective in an interview with CBS 8, suggesting the possibility of a medical emergency. "I think ... when she hit the curb she panicked and she stepped on the gas," he said. Koester, alongside other bystanders, attempted a rescue by rushing into the water, an effort ultimately marked by his lamentation, "I wish I could have saved her life, and I couldn't."
