A confrontation that seemingly started with a thrown drink escalated to gunfire, resulting in the death of a man in a parking lot off North Tamarind Avenue. The West Palm Beach Police Department (WPBPD) responded to a ShotSpotter alert around 6:25 p.m. yesterday, finding the man with deadly gunshot wounds as detailed by CBS12. The victim, whose identity has yet to be released, died after being rushed to St. Mary's Hospital.
Subsequent to the incident, surveillance footage enabled officers to get a glimpse of the tragic event, capturing a blue Chevrolet truck involved as the crime unfolded. The WPBPD reported that the victim appeared to throw an object, speculated to be a BeatBox beverage, at a passing vehicle. As the thrower raised his hands and stumbled, the truck sped away, leaving him to collapse on the ground. Authorities located and arrested the truck's driver, 18-year-old Demetri Turner, who has been charged with first-degree murder with a firearm. Turner, as per his statement to WPBPD, was transporting a person and her friend when the victim initiated conversation with the two women and apparently used his car to block the store's driveway. Turner claims to have retrieved his gun fearing further escalation, this sequence of events was captured by CBS12. When the victim allegedly threw the drink at his car, Turner admitted to stopping the truck, displaying his weapon and firing it three times. He expressed uncertainty about whether his shots hit the victim.
