A 21-year-old man has been arrested after authorities responded to a potential threat at Deretchin Elementary School in The Woodlands. The incident unfolded around 2:45 p.m. yesterday when the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call from an individual making alarming threats, including a statement that he would "shoot up" the school if law enforcement failed to arrive, as reported by Click2Houston.
Upon their arrival, deputies found the young man actively harming himself, having in possession of a knife and what appeared to be a firearm, which was later identified as a realistic airsoft pistol. The Woodlands, usually a quiet suburban enclave, became the focal point of intense law enforcement activity. Taking considerations for the safety of any personnel on the school grounds, the deputies employed less-lethal methods to safely detain the man without further incident.
The suspect was subsequently transported to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation. As per the KHOU report, he is expected to face charges for a third-degree felony of possessing a weapon where prohibited. It remains unclear if the summer break had left the campus empty of students and staff during the episode.
"We are committed to the safety of our schools and communities," said Lieutenant Scott Spencer of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, as noted by KHOU. This sentiment was echoed in the school's populated residential neighborhood, where worries about mental health and gun violence often converge in debates. Authorities urge anyone experiencing a mental health crisis to reach out for help, dialing 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Fortunately, the prompt response from law enforcement ensured that the episode was resolved without injury to anyone involved.
