Five individuals were injured this past weekend in a severe collision on Interstate 40 at North Danny Thomas Boulevard. Action News 5 reports that the incident occurred shortly before 10:50 p.m. on Saturday, when a Toyota Corolla was found against the guardrail facing the wrong direction, and a black BMW X3 was ablaze.

The wreckage, which resulted from the BMW reportedly driving recklessly prior to the crash, left one passenger in critical condition. According to WREG, a witness relayed that the female driver of the BMW was "swerving between lanes" when she suddenly lost control and collided with the rear of the Corolla. This caused the Corolla to spin out and face the opposite way on the interstate.

Two passengers in the BMW were ejected through the rear windows during the ensuing chaos. FOX13 Memphis notes that the Memphis Fire Department transported the driver and passengers to various hospitals, and a citation was given to the driver of the BMW for failing to maintain a safe lookout, along with financial responsibility and no state registration violations.

All of the injured, including the driver of the BMW, were taken to the hospital, with two passengers having to be ejected from the car. A passenger, who was later identified in critical condition, reportedly told police that the BMW's driver had been driving recklessly, swerving "in and out of lanes" before the crash, as described by WREG. The BMW is said to have rolled and spun out several times after the impact.

The investigations continue as authorities attempt to piece together the complete sequence of events that led up to this harrowing incident on one of Memphis' busiest thoroughfares.
