A fatal car accident in Lafayette Parish has claimed the life of an Abbeville man, Louisiana State Police Troop I has reported. The collision occurred last Tuesday night, close to 11:00 p.m., when Schuyler Lewis, age 36, driving on Louisiana Highway 724, lost control of his vehicle and struck an embankment followed by a tree and a utility pole. According to a statement released by the Louisiana State Police, the incident happened near the intersection with Paul Molbert Road.
The preliminary report by the authorities indicated that Lewis, was at the wheel of a 2023 Kia Sportage when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle veered off the road while navigating a curve. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, with routine toxicology samples having been collected for further analysis. Lewis, was not using a seatbelt at the time of the accident and was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Louisiana State Police have reiterated the importance of road safety. "Troopers wish to remind motorists to always make safe decisions while behind the wheel," their statement stressed, emphasizing the critical need to adhere to traffic laws, avoid impairing substances, fatigue, or distractions, and to always ensure every vehicle occupant is in compliance with restraint protocols.
