The Arkansas State Police (ASP) are currently investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that took place on Saturday night in Polk County. The confrontation occurred around 10:30 p.m. at a residential property on County Road 14 in Wickes, as confirmed by various local sources.
According to reports from Action News 5, a Grannis Police Department officer was dispatched to assist with an eviction at the residence. During this process, 65-year-old Darrin Laudermilk allegedly stepped out onto his driveway, pistol in hand, and started firing shots. In turn, the officer on site retaliated with gunfire, resulting in Laudermilk's death at the scene.
The FOX13 Memphis reports reinforce that Laudermilk was pronounced deceased by the Polk County Coroner immediately following the incident. His body is slated to be transported to the Arkansas State Crime Lab, which will determine the official manner and cause of his death.
The ASP Criminal Investigation Division (CID) special agents have taken the lead on this case. Further details provided by DeltaPlex News indicate that the CID will compile an investigative file upon completion of their analysis. This file is expected to be reviewed by the Polk County Prosecutor, who will decide if the lethal force used by the officer was lawful under Arkansas statutes.
