Josephine Hardin, who had joined the Atlanta law office of Huff, Powell & Bailey following her graduation from Emory University School of Law in 2023, was in Texas with her mother to celebrate the holiday when the tragedy struck, the firm told FOX 5 Atlanta.
Richard Freer, the Dean of Emory University School of Law, expressed his sorrow in a statement that captured the broad sentiment of loss felt by the institution. "We remember Josephine warmly. She was a buoyant, positive, smart, engaged, and beloved member of Emory Law. I cannot imagine the pain her family, friends, and loved ones are experiencing at this moment. But I know that all of Emory Law – faculty, staff, students, and alumni – hold them in our thoughts. We hope for peace and comfort for them. And Josephine will never be forgotten in our community," as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
Hardin's community activities and volunteer work also drew attention, highlighting the impact she made beyond the legal sphere. According to 11Alive, Hardin made time to help at the Atlanta Community Food Bank and the Georgia Society of Healthcare Risk Managers. In addition, her dedication extended to the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation, where she participated in their Saturday Lawyer Program, offering legal services to those less fortunate.
Her alma mater, the University of the South, Sewanee, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Sustainability in 2019, joined in mourning. And the Howell Puff Bailey law firm, where she had worked, remembered, "Josephine was a natural leader, and many deep and meaningful friendships were formed during her time here," which they shared in a heartbreaking acknowledgment of her passing, reported by 11Alive.
