Atlanta’s community and press freedom organizations are set to attend a scheduled press conference by Senator Josh McLaurin concerning journalist Mario Guevara, who is currently detained by ICE despite holding legal residency in the U.S. since 2004. According to Senate Press, the event will take place on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. on the south steps of the Georgia State Capitol, where details of Guevara’s situation are expected to be presented.
The announcement lists several speakers, including Guevara’s attorney Giovanni Diaz, his children Katherine and Oscar Guevara, Katherine Jacobsen from the Committee to Protect Journalists, and Nora Benavidez of Free Press. Their remarks are expected to highlight the journalist’s role and the circumstances of his detention, which has drawn attention from immigration and First Amendment advocacy groups.
Senator McLaurin’s press conference is open to the public, with media members encouraged to confirm attendance in advance by emailing Zach Pishock. Mario Guevara, known for his reporting on immigration issues and amplifying the perspectives of those affected, is now at the center of his own case.
