
An Aurora community is left grappling with the tragic aftermath of a high-speed crash that claimed the lives of two people and resulted in the arrest of an 18-year-old driver. Olvin Lidenis Carcamo-Meza is facing accusations of vehicular homicide after police say he was traveling at a harrowing 121 mph, more than thrice the posted speed limit, as per 9NEWS. The Aurora Police Department reports that Carcamo-Meza was arrested on suspicion of two counts of vehicular homicide following the incident.
The deadly crash, which occurred on South Airport Boulevard and Alameda Avenue, involved Carcamo-Meza's black Audi sedan striking a white Hyundai sedan occupied by the victims, and later impacting a Toyota sedan, resulting in minor injuries to the Toyota's driver. According to KDVR, the suspect allegedly failed to stop for a red light leading up to the devastating crashes. Carcamo-Meza was arrested after being released from the hospital.
The collision tragically resulted in the deaths of Maira Zapata-Ramirez and an unidentified teen. The incident has spurred a dialogue on road safety and the unpredictable threats posed by such high-speed driving. While Carcamo-Meza has not been officially charged, a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Tuesday in Arapahoe County District Court, according to The Denver Post.
