The Druid Sexual Health Clinic, a longstanding institution in Baltimore City that has been grappling with severe infrastructure woes, has again come under scrutiny by the Office of the Inspector General (OIG). According to FOX Baltimore and the latest findings from the Office of the Inspector General (OIG), the clinic has been struggling to remain operational amid a recent heatwave, forcing it to cancel numerous patient appointments as internal temperatures soared between 81°F and 86°F.
An OIG visit on June 24, amidst a Code Red Extreme Heat Alert announced by the Baltimore City Health Department, revealed staff office rooms deserted because the oppressive heat made them unusable, despite the clinic's reduced schedule of being open only on Tuesdays and Thursdays. According to WBAL, the facility's HVAC system was unable to cope with the heat; a computer server room vital for the clinic's operations reached an alarming 85 degrees, risking power outages. Additionally, the building's electrical wiring was deemed incapable of supporting additional freestanding air conditioning units.
These temperature-related disruptions have had broader implications for the clinic's services, including the integrity of HIV and Hepatitis C rapid testing kits, which are sensitive to heat, and patient accessibility, particularly when operations must relocate to the Eastern Clinic on E. Fayette Street. "We have employees that are working in these conditions, and we had patients were literally saying ‘Oh my God, it is so hot’," said OIG Isabel Cumming, as detailed by WBAL.
Despite temporary fixes, such as the Department of General Services working to lower temperatures to an "acceptable range" as of June 24 and the availability of portable air conditioning units, the clinic ultimately faces a dire need for an overhaul.
