Residents of Lake Meadows have been put on high alert after a series of robberies were reported in the area, with the Chicago Police Department issuing a community notice detailing similar incidents of mugging and violence. According to the alert, the incidents occurred over the last few weeks with the victims approached on the street, forcefully deprived of their belongings, and then left as the perpetrators vanished on foot.
These alarming events took place on the 400 block of East 34th St., the 3400 block of South Rhodes Ave., and the 3400 block of South Cottage Grove Ave., spanning from June 19 to July 2. Some of the victims suffered physical attacks during the robberies, and one incident involved the assailants throwing rocks and brandishing a knife to intimidate the victim's goods. They then fled without concern for the consequences of their actions.
Witness descriptions have painted the assailants as African-American males, albeit with obscured identities due to hooded sweatshirts and ski masks. With the community's sense of safety in jeopardy, local law enforcement has recommended that individuals heighten their awareness of their surroundings and report any suspicious individuals or activities promptly to the police.
Additional advice from the CPD includes staying calm if confronted, trying to memorize any unique features of the assailants, not pursuing them but instead immediately contacting the authorities, and, if possible, remaining at the scene until they arrive. They have further stressed the importance of collecting contact information from any witnesses that could certainly provide valuable information during stressful moments when remembering may prove challenging.
