The Chula Vista City Council is stepping up its game on electric micromobility, laying down the law with a new ordinance to keep the streets safe and sustainable. Per the latest scoop by Chula Vista's official news release, the city is clamping down with some fresh rules that sync up with Cali's state law, targeting electric skateboards, scooters, bikes, and those low-speed NEVs. But, they're not tossing the book at folks with disabilities who need their mobility devices.
Children under 12 are prohibited from operating Class 1 or 2 electric bicycles. Adults are likewise advised against allowing minors to ride these vehicles—violations will not be tolerated in Chula Vista.
Additionally, sidewalks within commercial zones are now off-limits to electric bicycles and scooters unless otherwise indicated by official signage. Riders of Class 3 electric bicycles and motorized scooters are expressly barred from using any city sidewalks, as part of efforts to reduce conflicts between pedestrians and wheeled traffic. Motorized scooter operators must also restrict their travel to roadways with speed limits under 40 miles per hour, in accordance with local safety regulations.
Teens under 18 can't double up on electric vehicles. Young riders need helmets, for real, so strap in for safety. According to Councilmember Michael Inzunza, "This ordinance strikes a balance between embracing modern mobility solutions and ensuring the safety of all road users, especially our youngest residents and pedestrians," as the City of Chula Vista stated.
