The City of Chula Vista has inaugurated a free shuttle service to enhance mobility for its bayfront community members and visitors. According to a report by NBC San Diego, the Chula Vista Bayfront Shuttle Service will be shuttling residents and tourists through key regional stops with its four electric vans, reinforcing an eco-friendly approach to local transportation.
As per NBC San Diego, Councilman Cesar Fernandez spoke about this service's connectivity, allowing easy access to San Diego from points such as Gaylord and J Street Marina. While smiling, he highlighted, "It connects Gaylord and J Street Marina to all of San Diego." The service promises to be a boon for the bayfront, which the city foresees as a long-term revenue source. The initiative came when the City of San Diego had to make notable budget cuts, which were different from investing in more community amenities like this shuttle.
Chula Vista appears to be doubling down on civic improvements, maintaining its budget for increased city services, including fire and police. Mayor John McCann emphasized the strategic financial mindset, saying, per NBC San Diego, "Having tourists go to our downtown and spend money will more than offset the cost." He expressed optimism that residents will integrate the new service into their daily lives as the bayfront area develops.
The shuttle operates between 8 AM and 6 PM daily, supporting the existing public transportation infrastructure and linking to the newly built Gaylord Pacific Resort and Convention Center. Mayor McCann told NBC San Diego, "You'll actually be able to finally live in the Chula Vista Bayfront." The non-existent fare of this service coincides with its attempt to deliver non-existent emissions, pointing towards Chula Vista's vision of a sustainable future.
Details about the shuttle service were also shared on social media, with the City of Chula Vista’s Instagram post stating, "Hop On the Free Bayfront Shuttle!” This post introduced the shuttle's Blue and Green Lines, connecting to E Street & H Street Transit Centers and connecting the bayfront to various key destinations.
