A tragic event has shaken a Clayton County neighborhood following the shooting of a 17-year-old boy over the weekend, confirmed by police. The young victim was reportedly performing yard work when he was fatally shot in the head on Saturday evening, around 8 p.m., according to a 11Alive News report. Clayton County Police responded to the scene at the 700 block of Villa Way, just outside the city limits of Jonesboro, where they discovered the unresponsive teenager.
Neighbors, deeply upset by the violence, expressed their concerns and fond memories of the teen, who was known for cutting grass in the local area. One particular neighbor described the youth as an "honest kid," who was respectful and fair in his dealings. "If I asked him to do something, he did it, never tried to overcharge me or any of those things, just a nice guy as far as I know," the neighbor told 11Alive News. The same neighbor recalled hearing six to eight gunshots at the time of the incident.
The repercussions of the shooting rippled through the community, affecting even the simplest of gatherings. "We was having a birthday party for a 3-year-old. There was kids in the street playing. It’s just, I just moved here 3, 4 months ago and this happened literally three doors down from my house," a local resident, who requested anonymity citing safety concerns, recounted to FOX 5. The teen, after being taken to a local hospital, succumbed to his injuries earlier this morning, as confirmed by the Clayton County medical examiner.
The police have yet to identify a suspect or establish a motive for this violent act, and they continue their investigation into the incident. Several children, who were present when the shooting occurred ran to request assistance from the neighbors, urging them to call 911, per statements given to FOX 5. During this difficult time, the name of the teenage victim has not been released, as the family and community mourn the loss of their young resident and seek answers in the wake of this inexplicable crime.
