It’s official that Phase II of the East 10th Street Widening Project in Cookeville is complete. Cookeville's Civic Alerts reported that the newly broadened street has gone from three to five lanes between Highway 111 and Fisk Road, and is now fully open for traffic. This expansion aims to streamline one of Cookeville's key arteries, offering what city planners expect to be a significant improvement in traffic flow.

The city celebrated the completion with the necessary fanfare – a tape-cutting ceremony that brought together City Council members, city staff, and representatives from Rogers Group Inc. and Clinton Engineering and Surveying. City Manager James Mills said, "It's incredibly rewarding to see the culmination of the two decades of discussion, planning, and work that went into this project." Mayor Laurin Wheaton highlighted infrastructure as the backbone of community futureproofing, saying via the City of Cookeville website, "The completion of this street project reflects the outstanding work of our city departments and the invaluable contributions of our partners whose collaboration made this achievement possible."

Infrastructure improvements didn't just stop at lane expansion. The project included a complete overhaul of underground utilities, including new stormwater drainage, sanitary sewers, and water systems. Plus, the upgrade embraced future-proofing with ADA-compliant sidewalks for greater pedestrian access. Rogers Group Inc. was responsible for the heavy lifting and winding down the project last week with final touches that ran the gamut from pavement striping to the inevitable site cleanup.

With a considerable price tag of $8.78 million, Phase II required a comprehensive investment covering acquisitions, engineering, and construction. Rogers Group Inc. received kudos from Mills for helping "bring this project to life." Wheaton extended thanks to all stakeholders involved and the citizens of Cookeville for their support and, presumably, their patience during the construction phase. While this phase wraps up, the city's already got its sights on Phase III, which will continue the street’s expansion up to North Washington Avenue.

Phase III has hit the ground running with engineering and design courtesy of a contract signed with Clinton Engineering, worth approximately $520,000. The project will enter the design phase for six to eight months.
