Attention Cookeville drivers: a significant change is coming to the intersection of North Jefferson Avenue and Freeze Street. Starting Monday, July 14, the city is set to introduce a new four-way stop to manage the bustling traffic and enhance safety for both motorists and pedestrians, according to the City of Cookeville.
This safety measure means all vehicles, including those cruising along North Jefferson Avenue, will be required to halt at the stop signs before they can proceed. To further safety measures, a solar-powered flashing stop signal and a new traffic island will be installed at the southeast corner of the junction. Workers, who will be on-site for the installation, are a reminder for drivers to remain vigilant and patient as they navigate the area.
For those on foot, the intersection's safety upgrades will continue with the introduction of a new crosswalk on the east side of Freeze Street. This addition will complement the already existing crosswalk on the intersection’s west side, completing a pedestrian-friendly overhaul.
With the installation phase bringing workers into close proximity with traffic, motorists are urged to exercise extra caution. The city seeks to minimize disruption and requests that drivers be attentive to the changes, especially while the area is still under construction. Those seeking details or with inquiries can reach out to the Cookeville Public Works Department at 931-520-5249, the city provided in a statement.
