
The City of Dunwoody is taking a fresh step towards nature-based education with the groundbreaking ceremony that initiated the construction of the highly anticipated Wildcat Creek Learning Lab within the 25-acre park, as Dunwoody Nature Center representatives, alongside city council members, convened to celebrate this new venture. The upcoming two-story structure is set to include three flexible classroom spaces, an office area, restrooms, and an outdoor deck to offer an immersive learning environment, effectively responding to an uptick in demand for nature-focused programming, according to Dunwoody News.
Nancy Longacre, Executive Director of the Dunwoody Nature Center, announced, "Wildcat Creek Learning Lab will be transformative, allowing us to serve more program participants and park visitors throughout the year," in a statement obtained by Dunwoody News, highlighting the insufficiency of current facilities she goes on to discuss the enhancement on the Learning Lab's future roles which will potentially increase the program's capacity by 20%, inviting over 700 new families each year; the confirmed additions include a preschool program and an expanded after-school curriculum for kindergarten to fifth grade.
This educational project boasts a $2.5 million budget, backed by both private donations and public funds, with Dunwoody City chipping in a commendable $1 million investment, during her address Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch praised the project as a reflection of the city's dedication to education, community spirit, and environmental stewardship, stating the City Council's pride in endorsing a project that integrates these essential facets into a singular, impactful experience.
The preliminary phase of this six-month construction timeline shall prioritize the establishment of water infrastructure necessary for the Learning Lab, stated the city's plans include stormwater systems, trench drains, and curbing, as well as paving pedestrian pathways that will merge the new lab with the existing Main Building thereby crafting a seamless union between the two points of interest.
