A suspect was hospitalized Friday morning after a shooting involving law enforcement in Lumpkin County, Lumpkin County Sheriff Stacy Jarrard confirmed. Jarrard said the Hall County Sheriff's Office was also involved in the incident, which he described as an officer-involved shooting.
According to the Gainesville Times, a member of the Hall County Sheriff's Office was involved in the Friday morning shooting that sent the suspect to the hospital. Jarrard made the statement in a Facebook video posted by his office, which had drawn thousands of views by Friday afternoon.
As reported by 11Alive, Jarrard said he could not specify how the incident unfolded or which officers or agency fired on the suspect. The sheriff said he knew of no other threat at the time and asked people to keep the officers and the suspect in their prayers.
Accounts Differ on Exact Location
Reports have varied on precisely where the shooting took place. The seed facts in 11Alive's coverage placed the incident on the east side of Lumpkin County, near Mincie Mountain along Emory Stephens Road, while AccessNorthGA described the shooting as occurring in the area of Emory Stephens Road and Highway 52 east, per its report. A separate WSB-TV snippet placed the shooting at Mincie Mountain Road and Emory Stephens, though that account carries lower confidence than the others.
At the time of its report, AccessNorthGA said it was unclear whether the incident involved any injuries or fatalities beyond the hospitalized suspect. The Hall County Sheriff's Office confirmed that its agency was involved and planned to release a brief statement later Friday, according to the same report from AccessNorthGA.
Multiple Agencies on Scene
The Georgia State Patrol worked jointly with the Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office in responding to the scene, per 11Alive's reporting. Accounts also diverge on the status of a state investigation: 11Alive's reporting, attributed to the Hall County Sheriff's Office, indicated the Georgia Bureau of Investigation had taken the lead in the investigation, while AccessNorthGA reported that the case was reportedly being turned over to the GBI. 11Alive said it had reached out to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for additional details.
A Recent History of Officer-Involved Shootings in the County
Friday's shooting is not the only officer-involved shooting the small North Georgia county has seen. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution previously reported on a separate Lumpkin County shooting in which a deputy opened fire after a suspect identified as Paul Cheek allegedly pulled out a knife. No officers were injured in that earlier incident, the AJC reported, though the newspaper's account does not establish how the two cases relate, if at all.
For now, the central facts remain limited to what Jarrard has said publicly: a suspect is hospitalized, Hall County deputies and the Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office were both involved, and the exact sequence of events has not been detailed. The sheriff's request for prayers for both the officers and the suspect underscores how early the investigation remains.
