The City of Dunwoody, in collaboration with the Dunwoody Nature Center, marks the beginning of a new chapter in environmental education with the commencement of the Wildcat Creek Learning Lab. The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, July 16, at 10:30 a.m., where city officials will join together with leaders from the Nature Center to initiate this anticipated project. As reported by a Dunwoody municipal announcement, the venture is designed to scale up the city's capacity for nature-related programs and education, responding to an increasing community interest in such offerings.
Housed within the city's 25-acre park, the detailed plans for the Learning Lab feature a 2,500-square-foot two-story edifice, housing three flexible classrooms, office space, and three bathrooms. A second-story outdoor deck is also in the blueprint, expected to provide an engaging backdrop for hands-on learning experiences. "Wildcat Creek Learning Lab will be transformative, allowing us to serve more program participants and park visitors throughout the year," expressed Nancy Longacre, the Executive Director of the Dunwoody Nature Center. The current facilities, Longacre suggests, do not suffice in meeting the burgeoning demands for nature camps and educational activities, as noted by the City of Dunwoody.
The addition of the Learning Lab is set to broaden the program's reach by 20%, availing its resources to over 700 more families yearly. This expansion is envisioned to include a new morning preschool program and an extended curriculum for K-5 students after school. Such developments further the Nature Center's goal of connecting people with nature."Dunwoody Park is one of our city's greatest assets," Mayor Lynn Deutsch declared, as stated on the city's official website.
Funding for the $2.5 million initiative has been pooled from private donors and public financing, including a $1 million contribution from the City of Dunwoody. Beginning with vital infrastructure, the project's first phase will tackle watershed enhancements, including the installation of stormwater systems and pedestrian walkways which will unify the Learning Lab to the Main Building. Projected to last six months, construction details and updates have been made available for public consumption through the official City of Dunwoody website.
