A 70-year-old Rockwood man has been charged with first-degree murder following a fatal shooting in Cumberland County, authorities announced. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) reported that Devin Schillinger was arrested after the incident, which took place yesterday evening, as WSMV reported.
The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene on George Anna Drive, where they discovered 36-year-old Michael Kerley with a gunshot wound. Despite efforts by medical personnel, Kerley was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. A joint investigation by TBI, and the sheriff's office, led to Schillinger's arrest on the night of the shooting, according to FOX 17.
Devin Schillinger is currently being held on a $1 million bond at the Cumberland County Jail. The investigation into the shooting was initiated at the request of 13th Judicial District Attorney General Bryant Dunaway, as TBI Newsroom disclosed.
While the specifics of the events leading up to the shooting remain under investigation, TBI special agents have determined Schillinger's responsibility in the matter. It must be noted that, "The charges and allegations referenced in this release are merely accusations of criminal conduct and not evidence," the TBI Newsroom statement reminded, "The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and convicted through due process of law." Further details of the case are currently pending as the investigation continues.
