A traffic collision involving a white Chevy Astrovan and an electric scooter rider on June 26, 2025, has tragically claimed the life of the scooter operator, marking the 18th traffic death in San José this year. According to the San José Police Department (SJPD), the collision occurred on Capitol Expressway near Tuers Road.
The victim, an adult male scooter rider, was initially hospitalized with life-threatening injuries but later succumbed to the damage sustained. In a statement provided by the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner, the rider was pronounced dead last Saturday. Efforts to identify and quickly apprehend the suspect led to the arrest of the Astrovan's adult male driver, who now faces felony hit and run charges, as well as DUI, and has since been booked into the Santa Clara County Jail.
Investigations revealed that the van veered into the bike lane where the scooter rider was traveling, leading to the catastrophic event. The vehicle fled the scene, only to be stopped by incoming officers responding to the situation. The Office of the Medical Examiner will release the victim's identity once all proper notifications have been made.
The San José Police Department's Traffic Investigations Unit urges anyone with information regarding this collision to contact Detective Aldinger at [email protected] or by calling 408-277-4654.
