Speed demons and distracted drivers in Eugene might want to slow their roll and pay attention to the road, as local law enforcement has been turning up the heat on traffic violations. On Wednesday, the Eugene Police Traffic Safety Unit led a collaborative initiative to curb reckless driving, enlisting support from multiple agencies, including Springfield Police, Oregon State Police, and others, according to a recent press release on the City of Eugene's official website.
The focus of this extensive effort was to actively patrol streets known for high-speed traffic and other driving complaints. The officers targeted Beltline Road, Interstate 5, and several other key routes throughout the day. By the time the day was over, there had been 184 traffic stops encompassing a range of infractions from speeding to failing to wear a seatbelt.
As noted by the Eugene Police Traffic Safety Unit, the majority of the stops, 112 to be exact, were for speeding. Added to this were a mix of other violations, including 15 stops for not wearing seatbelts and 9 for distracted driving. Following these stops, officers issued 111 citations and 93 warnings. These stats were highlighted in the press release detailing the patrol's outcomes. They also reported three arrests specifically for criminal driving while suspended and two vehicle impounds.
Other infractions detected during the patrol spree included Illegal tinted windshields, Improper Display of License Plates, and violations of Oregon's "Move-Over" law. The evidenced commitment of these agencies to address speed-related crimes and other driving issues was bolstered by the funding from ODOT/NHTSA that allowed for overtime patrols, aiming for high visibility across the Eugene metro area.
